Any weekend where I get to watch the boys play baseball (finally!!) and preach is a rockin’ weekend.
Here’s all you need to know…
#1 - I CAN’T WAIT TO PREACH ON SUNDAY
•I’m talking about Jesus this week and why He STRIPPED for us. I will NEVER get over that for the rest of my life. He was a REBEL – I’m FIRED UP!
•Yes, we are doing a Foo Fighters song on Sunday – that ROCKS!!
•Yes, it’s an AWESOME weekend to invite guests – they will hear the Gospel and the Vision of our church like never before. If you know ANYONE who has given up on church, do them the biggest favor of their lives and get them here this Sunday.
•Being off 2 weeks has been incredible and much needed. I will NEVER go 35 weeks in a row again – suicide. My wife even told me a couple of months ago I needed counseling I was so cranky!!
#2 – I LOVE OUR EASTER CHICK
•Please PRAY like you never have before that people would respond and show up on Easter Sunday like never before.
#3 – I HAVE A GREAT SENSE OF URGENCY, LIKE THE APOSTLE PAUL, TO PREACH THE GOSPEL TO THIS CULTURE (Romans 1:14)
•Of all the things that BLOW me away in life, nothing does it like the Gospel.
•The fact that Jesus STRIPPED and Died for me is more than I deserve…if we ever get over that, we need a heart transplant.
•In a recent blog post, Perry Noble said it best – “We cannot claim we love someone if we KNOW the Gospel will save them from hell and yet refuse to talk to them about Jesus…or even invite them to church!”
•This is WHY I’m so FIRED up about Easter – I promise you we are going all out on Easter Sunday to provide a place you can bring the people you care about the most in life to hear about Jesus.
•We are asking God to change at least 100 people’s lives on Easter Sunday – the Biggest Day of Life Change in our church’s history!
•PRAY for us as we are working harder than we ever have…and beg God to do something BIG.
#4 – IT’S BEEN AN INCREDIBLE WEEK
•The buzz about the Financial Learning Experience on Wednesday night has not stopped
•It’s exciting to hear about so many of you who have already gone to Joe Sangl’s website, began budgeting, scheduled your Debt Freedom Date, calculated your retirement nest egg, and begun to color in the squares on your HOME or Whatever your Dream PAY OFF SPECTACULAR is.
•“I Was Broke, Now I’m Not” Connection Groups begin the week of April 13. They will meet for 6 weeks and you will be well on your way to positioning yourself to be debt free, less stress, and doing exactly what you were put on earth to do. #5 – THE CARPENTER FAMILY ACTUALLY GETS TO PLAY BASEBALL THIS WEEKEND – I Can’t Wait!!

•Last Night was OFF THE CHAIN. Truly EXCEEDED EXPECTATIONS!
•Almost late, my boy got sick as I was dropping him at 706 and had to run him back home – Lisa rescued me though (that’s my life story – being rescued by Jesus and Lisa).
•A Rebel – someone who goes against the grain…flips the script…counter-cultural…makes it happen in spite of the odds.
•Making a PLAN, having the HOPE, and Knowing exactly WHAT TO DO to become Debt Free – THAT’s a COUNTER-CULTURAL REBEL!!
•154 people are now Armed & Dangerous with the tools they need to not only become debt free, but will begin to position themselves, many for the first time, to do exactly what they’ve been put on earth by God to do.
•We PLANTED SEEDS that will be harvested in the weeks, months, and years ahead that has the potential to impact generations to come as families and singles say “NO” to debt and “YES” to making a plan to get their financial house in order.
•So many of our singles and young couples currently in pre-marital were there – that FIRED me up.
•One of our 20 Somethings came up to me after and said she had already been applying the “Debt Snowball” to her finances and as a result of getting rid of all the unsecured debt was purchasing her first home next month – that FIRED me up even more!
•Beginning the week of April 13, I’m asking ALL of our Connection Groups (this is an ALL Skate) to to go through Joe Sangl’s six week small group financial study, “I Was Broke and Now I’m Not.” The longer you put this off, the tougher it gets to climb out of the ‘Hole.” If you are NOT in a Connection Group, GET IN ONE by emailing Sheryl sgraham@compasschurch.com. In 6 weeks you will learn how to get out of debt (seriously- you can do this!!) and have FUN planning your financial future (yes, it’s fun when you have a plan).
•HUGE THANKS to our FLE Volunteer Coordinators and Deby Sorenson for leading the way. You brought your A-Game. Joe’s team said the coordination and registration was THE BEST they had been a part of any place in the country!!
•HUGE THANKS to our 7 Financial Counselors – thank you for your willingness to serve others. Because of you, Compass is now able to offer FREE Financial Counseling and Budget Planning for anyone who needs it – that’s unheard of!!
•HUGE THANKS to our 706 LEADERSHIP Team and Volunteer Childcare Workers for unselfishly serving our students and kids of the 154 Rebels last night – you are what makes this church so special!
•We will be offering a full make-up Financial Learning Experience for all who couldn’t attend the April 1st FLE. Stay tuned for the date.
EASTER WEEKEND – a quick word….
•The Creative Team did it again – knocked it out of the park with the game plan and promotion. I’m more excited about how God has led us to present the Gospel this Easter than any other time in our church history. I’ll share more tomorrow.
•PRAY like crazy for people to be led to come and do WHATEVER it takes to get people there next weekend – they WILL HEAR the clearest presentation I’ve ever given of how Jesus wants to Rock their world and change their lives (Here are the 4 service times by location)!
•Northeast Georgia and Beyond better watch out - Compass Church is addicted to changed lives and I believe with all my heart there is no stopping a church that boldly presents the Gospel of Jesus Christ and whose people put God first in their finances.

•I had a business partner tell me something I’ve never forgotten – “Showing up is 90% of the game – the rest will happen when you get there!” I’ve never forgotten that and tried to live a lot of my life like that.
•I remember “teetering” on which college or even if I should attend college – of the dozens of colleges I looked at I decided to Show Up at Liberty University. It was the best “5″ years of my life and I ended up traveling around the world and doing an internship at the White House one summer. Bottom Line – I’m really glad I SHOWED UP.
•You might be thinking: “It’s not for me”…”I don’t need this”…”I’m so far in debt, there’s really no hope”…”I got my act together financially”…”I don’t want to face that big gorilla that lives in my personal finances”…”I’d rather not deal with the obvious elephant in the room – checkbook, debt, and our personal finances”…
•I want to encourage and challenge (or for those that need a kick in the butt, that too) and say the Wise Thing to do would be if at all possible to SHOW UP tonight.
•I’m blown away by who’s coming – college students, singles, young couples, people just getting started in life, people on the brink of filing bankruptcy (like tomorrow), marriages that are hanging on by a thread hoping this can help them reduce stress & conflict, people whose finances are in total dissarray, people already on a budget eager to learn how they can more efficiently become debt free, some that are just curious, stay at home moms, doctors, lawyers, CEOs, business owners, bankers, accountants, even my 93 year old grandmother (who’s pumped about it).
•This is for EVERYONE – there was a buzz this morning at 6:30am at my Wed morning Men’s Group about tonight’s event and the possibility and potential it provided for us as men to get the tools and help we needed to get our financial houses in order.
•Men – I promise you there’s nothing so sexy as being SPIRITUAL AND DEBT FREE!!
•You have an opportunity to SHOW UP tonight and see something BIG happen – I hope you’ll walk through that door.
•FLE begins promptly at 6:30 (ends at 8:30). Childcare & 706 Student (middle and high school) Drop Off begins at 6pm at Compass’ Athens Campus.

•If I could wish ANYTHING for you as a leader and pastor, it would be for you to #1 Know Jesus and to #2 Experience Financial Freedom so you are freed up to do exactly what you have been placed on this earth to do.
•That is exactly why Compass Church is hosting Joe Sangl’s Financial Learning Experience tomorrow night, Wednesday, April 1.
•If you are in a financial hole – don’t worry, there’s HOPE and you CAN get out of it…and…if you are just beginning your financial journey in life what you will learn can save you from making dumb financial decisions that haunt so many of us.
•You’re absolutely CRAZY if you do not do EVERYTHING humanly possible to attend. He’ll be talking about how to establish a workable (not a pipe dream) plan that will get you out of the debt you are in, how to manage your money, and how to control your money instead of it controlling you. What he teaches is for the “average” person who makes an “average” salary and wants to and can live an “above average” life. I’m sick and tired of hearing people who say “if I just made more money, I could get rid of all my debt!” – that’s BULL! It takes a first step, a plan, and some work and discipline.
•Childcare will be at the church and 706 for middle and high schoolers, so we’ve eliminated ALL the excuses (you can drop off at 6 pm).
•Bring someone with you – you’ll both be glad you did!! I’ll see you there to begin the journey WEDNESDAY night, April 1 at 6:30pm.

•Seating is limited…We had 50+ sign up today alone – …when we’re out of room, we’re out of room.
•I want to encourage & challenge you to bring someone with you Wednesday night to the FLE that does not attend Compass that you know could benefit - splurge and pay their way – you’ll both be glad you did.
•It makes me smile to know Compass is a church that doesn’t just TELL you what to do, but actually TEACHES you how!!
•Loved sitting on the front row and taking notes – TWICE…some stuff I wrote down that really hit home:

…#1 cause of depression in American is hanging on to the same problem, not dealing with it, and 20 years later realizing you are still dealing with the same struggle.
•Talked about Money today and had people in all 3 services invite Jesus into their lives – way cool!!
•3 people accepted Christ at the 11:15 AC video service – this really works – watch out NE GA, you’re about to meet Jesus in a whole new way!
•100+ People signed up for the 90 Day Tithe Challenge – this is life changing for our church and more importantly for the many people who will connect with Jesus as a result!!
•WORSHIP was just ON today – we’re blessed. Both Bands Rocked it!! Loved the GREED song by Decemberadio. Loved Matt Ammons fresh arrangement of an old classic “I Surrender All.”
•Saw Wes & Lauren actually eating lunch before 4:00 today – OC tear down team getting better each week.
•Our Compass Volunteers make the Compass experience like none other!!
•Really enjoyed hanging out with Joe this afternoon and you know me, I asked a ton of questions and he asked me some tough ones too.
…Ask the Right QUESTIONS to the Right PEOPLE and you will get the Right ANSWERS!!
•He had GREAT THINGS to say about what God is doing on both campuses and ONE KEY AREA we need to fix asap – we’ll begin working on that in staff first thing tomorrow. Crap – it’s not an easy or cheap one but will go a long way to MAXIMIZING our impact connecting people to Jesus which is what it’s all about. The Best is usually not the easiest or cheapest!!
•Joe and his team trained 7 Financial Counselors today in a 5 hour session. Huge thanks to our leaders who stepped up to the plate, gave up their day, and have a heart to help people become financially free and STRIP DEBT from their lives – Blows me away!!
•I believe with all my heart EASTER WEEKEND @ Compass will be the Biggest Weekend of Life Change we’ve ever experienced together. There’s a huge buzz, it’s going to be a crazy with a ton of new people checking out Compass, and most of all Heaven will be bigger and hell smaller at the end of the day!! Things to know about:
#1 – 4 Service Times to Choose From (adding a SATURDAY night service at 6pm @ the AC)

SUNDAY PRE-GAME – Can’t Miss Sunday

#2 – BIG NEWS ABOUT SUNDAY
I am PUMPED, PASSIONATE, and FIRED UP about THIS SUNDAY. What can I say…taking a break is great but it’s even greater to come back to a job and people you love – I missed you guys.
So yea, I’m back and can’t wait to be with you Sunday, but here’s why I’m so PUMPED – JOE SANGL has agreed to join us THIS SUNDAY and help me teach week 3 of STRIPPED!
I just finished reading Joe’s book, “I Was Broke Now I’m Not” on the airplane ride home yesterday and listening to one of his recent podcasts…IT FIRED ME UP!!! I CAN PROMISE EVERY SINGLE PERSON that breathes oxygen and lives in Northeast Georgia will not want to miss hearing what Joe has to say on the subject of finances. It’s that good, it’s that relevant, and it’s that IMPORTANT.
Joe’s pastor, Perry Noble from New Spring Church said “Joe is an absolute freak – which is exactly why you should not just read, but devour his book.” I’m going to add one thing – you’ve got to experience Joe in a live setting too…there’s NOTHING like it. Dave Ramsey on crack!!”
That is why I know Sunday is going to be so powerful. I don’t know how I can say it any more clearly – THIS HAS QUICKLY BECOME A CAN’T MISS SUNDAY!!!! There’s not a more relevant topic the church could address. EVERYONE is feeling financial pressure these days. Change your plans, don’t sleep in, get your butt out of bed, invite everyone you know, you’ll be kicking yourself if you miss.
I honestly believe Joe is one of the leading authorities in our country on this subject. To tell you how highly I think of Joe and what God is saying through him all over the country, he is the FIRST guest speaker I’ve ever announced before the Sunday he came (most people like to skip when they don’t think the preacher man is speaking). It’s an incredible honor to tag team with him this Sunday and I know you and anyone you bring will have your life changed
as well as generations to come as we unlock how to STRIP away Debt and begin to do exactly what God has put us on this earth to do.
#3 – FINANCIAL LEARNING EXPERIENCE THIS WEDNESDAY

#4 – THE VACATION
Lis and I got back late last night. I could tell you that we had an UNBELIEVABLE time in the Dominican, the beach was INCREDIBLE, came back with a sexy tan, did not get propositioned to smoke any weed like we were in Jamaica, and I was UNDEFEATED in beach volleyball for the week. But I won’t do that because you’d HATE me more. Well, I just did!
Seriously, for those who are just getting to know us, the most treasured relationship I have on this earth is my wife and marriage. We do our best to teach and model the ’52-2′ principle (weekly date, 2 overnight get aways each year). Four years ago, at the strong recommendation of very wise counsel (thanks Dan) we began getting away for one week a year – just the two of us without the kids. Lis says it’s the ONLY WAY we can like each other and still stay married – seriously!!
Bottom Line – THAT ONE DECISION has been the best thing we’ve ever done to STRENGTHEN our marriage in “EVERY” area!!!!
Pastoring a church that understands that pastors need a break makes me want to preach my butt off and work as hard as I can for this church. I’m BLESSED way BEYOND what I deserve.
#5 – A WORD ABOUT EASTER
Compass – take a second to read this, pray about it, and then take action.
April 11th and 12th are our Easter services (4 services to choose from) at Compass. We are kicking off a new series called DOORS and I am praying for 100 people to walk through the door of salvation and life change on Easter Weekend. That would be the BIGGEST SINGLE DAY of LIFE CHANGE Compass has ever been part of. Our staff, prayer partners, and leadership team for weeks have been praying and begging God for the BIGGEST single day of Life Change in Compass and NE GA’s history to take place Easter Weekend.
Check that out – if that doesn’t move you, then read it again.
For some you may be able to read that and be indifferent…but for others this could be your mom or dad, brother or sister, son or daughter, classmate or roommate, co-worker or neighbor, or your spouse or boyfriend/girlfriend.
Easter is real…Jesus is real…Eternity is real. Heaven and Hell are real. I want Heaven to be bigger because of what we do THIS EASTER.
Be a Part of the Movement!!

Hey Compass Church! I am FIRED UP about the opportunity to hang out with you guys soon and teach about personal finances.
It is my passion to help others accomplish far more than they ever thought possible with their personal finances. I believe that when people are financially free, they are much more likely to go do EXACTLY what they have been put on earth to do!
I know that it was true in my life! I used to be broke with an average bank balance of $4.13. Every time that “life happened”, we would not have money to pay for it so we would turn to debt to finance it. After five years of marriage in which we acquired a ton of debt, my bride and I had what I call an “IHHE Moment.” An I Have Had Enough Moment. On December 2, 2002, we decided to change the way we managed money. In fourteen months, we became debt-free (except for the house), and we have never looked back!

STRIPPING MONEY
•Next to Inviting Jesus to change your life, I don’t know of a more important area of our lives we need to pay attention to than the #1 thing being “Stripped Away” in our culture today – MONEY!!
•I’ve been waiting for this moment for a LONG TIME – to find someone I knew, trusted, and was capable to teach our
people principles of Biblical Money Management that were simple, practical, easy to apply, and life changing!!
•That person is JOE SANGL (author of the brand new book, I was Broke and Now I’m Not) and that time is NOW.
•Several of our Volunteers attended his breakout at Unleash last week. Came to me afterwards screaming “WE’VE GOT TO GET THIS GUY TO COME TO COMPASS” – he’s like Dave Ramsey on crack”…They were PUMPED when they heard he was already scheduled!!!
•FLE is a no frills, lots of fun, in your face nuts & bolts about how you can manage your money, get on a path to becoming debt free, and be set free to do EXACTLY what God put you on this earth to do.
•It’s costing us our first born to bring him in, but that’s how serious we are about investing in your lives with practical life changing tools.
•In the past, I’ve had 4 Big Asks of everyone who attends Compass Church:
#1 – PRAY like crazy for God to Show UP & Show OFF,
#2 - INVITE everyone you know to experience a Sunday at Compass,
#3 – CIRCLE UP in a Connection Group because your life is defined by the people you circle up with,
#4 – SERVE through Volunteering and become a Connector to the Current of the Power of Christ that is ignited when the Gospel is unleashed
•Here’s #5 – DO WHATEVER IT TAKES to come April 1 to Joe Sangl’s FLE. SERIOUSLY – This is something You NEED to rearrange your calendar and change your plans to attend – it’s that GOOD and that IMPORTANT.
…And yea…if you are in DEBT, not only do you need to come to this, but you need to know you CAN get out of debt…stop blaming everyone and everything else and get to this Class on April 1st (this class and Jesus is all you need to CHANGE your life).
…If you don’t have a budget you NEED to come to this.
…If you are a college student, 20 Something, Single, engaged to be married, are already married, you NEED to come to this.
…If you have all the money you could ever want, you NEED to come to this – God has an UNBELIEVABLE reason why He’s Blessed you so much.
…If you attend Compass, breathe oxygen, and have ever spent any money on anything, you NEED to come to this.
…If you don’t believe in God but want to get your finances in order, c’mon – this is for you too.
•We’re removing ALL the obstacles. Parents, beginning at 6:00pm, you can drop your Middle & High School students at 706 and childcare (0-5th graders) will be provided on sight at our Athens Campus (indicate your needs in the space provided at online registration).
•Don’t Wait – Space is LIMITED so when the seats are gone, they are gone!

AMAZING – Can I just say I’m BLOWN away and HUMBLED by what God is doing in our church right now.
•In the past 4 weeks we’ve had 62 people invite Jesus to be their Savior, welcomed 400+ first time guests, and seen 50 people sign up for Connection Groups, our small group environment – that’s NOT normal and absolutely ROCKS!
•The 11:15 AC VIDEO Service is working INCREDIBLY…ok, ok, no need to say I told you so. Feedback we’ve received: “it exceeds expectations,” and “at first, I wasn’t too sure but now that I’ve been – it Rocks and I’m SO GLAD I don’t have to get up early for the 9:15.” (no doubt a 20 Something)
•Most Importantly – we are seeing lives changed EVERY WEEK – 7 people alone in January who invited Jesus into their life at the AC 11:15 service.
•What have we learned? You don’t need Jim to have a service – we need Jesus to be in the house!
•The AC Production Team under Jeri Baxter’s VOLUNTEER leadership is absolutely knocking this out. You need to check it out one Sunday. Hey, most of my family attends the 11:15 AC service!
•OC – you are getting it. We really sense a MOVEMENT of God in this community to Rock Oconee, Walton, and Barrow counties for Jesus.
•Huge thanks for taking the relational risks SO MANY of you have to INVITE your friends and family. CHANGED LIVES are contagious.
•The BUZZ is insane about what God is doing on BOTH of our local campuses AND in Poland, Nicaragua, and Oregon!
•Today was a reminder it’s not about us, it’s all about God.
•Set up at the OC was ROUGH – we they had to work around the school play. OC Production team under Buddy Prow’s VOLUNTEER leadership flat out made it happen!
•I might have had a little too much fun ‘smashing pigs’ (reference to message) but it drove home the point.
•As Christ Followers who have been radically forgiven, extravagantly purchased by Jesus’ blood, and extremely blessed – we must stop ROBBING GOD and start to BREAK THE BANK (realize GOD owns it all) and BRING THE TITHE (the training wheels of Christ Centered Generosity).
•I want so bad for us to be RADICALLY GENEROUS like the early church where they realized EVERYTHING they had was GOD’s, not their own.
•I Pray for the day when we will be known as CRAZY GIVERS, just like Jesus!
•The most POWERFUL way to Unleash the Gospel of Jesus Christ in this community is through our actions, giving, and service (John 13:35, John 3:16, Acts 4:32:33).
•So Many of you asked questions about Point #3, How to Make a Financial Plan, and I had so little time left to discuss…
•Some of you (@ the AC) questioned that I said in January Lis and I had written like 7 checks to Compass but there weren’t that many weeks. We write two – one for our weekly TITHE offering and one for our BEYOND offering.
•I say it almost every week but Compass VOLUNTEERS – YOU ARE THE BEST! You show up early, you stay late, you smile, YOU ARE making a HUGE DIFFERENCE! I’m BLOWN away by your love for people, self sacrifice, and willingness to do whatever it takes to connect people to Jesus.
•Dang – Our WORSHIP has been STRONG in 2009…I LOVE hearing you guys SING LOUD – gets me PUMPED every time I hear you.
•It was good to have MATT back at the AC – they missed him. Everybody who comes back to play says it feels like home!
•The AC Warehouse will always be a special place – it’s where GOD IGNITED this vision to Rock Northeast Georgia for Jesus!!

•LOVED the arrangement Matt did on I Surrender All. It’s a dream that one day we would sing songs written by our musicians – it’s beginning to happen!
•I can’t say LOUD ENOUGH how BLESSED we are to have the musicians we have every week leading us in worship!
•I love worshiping with Alex Maeland – WOW! He brings his A game every time. His passion for worship and heart for people are second to none!
•Did I mention we had people accept Christ today AND I talked about MONEY!
•My Father In Law treated 16 of us to Birthday lunch today (3 family birthdays in Feb) – He’s one of the most generous people I know!
•I bought a WHOLE CHEESECAKE (half Snickers and half Turtle) from the CHEESECAKE FACTORY to eat during the Super Bowl – AMAZING!!
