Archive for the “Uncategorized” Category•Sitting at my desk and really ALL I can think about are 3 things: #1-what GOD DID this past Sunday, #2-what He wants to do THIS SUNDAY, and #3 all of YOU (really, YOU & Your Friends that you are bringing with you Sunday – I’m so pumped that SO MANY of your friends are going to meet Jesus and see their lives IGNITED in 2009 like NEVER BEFORE!!)
•Hoping my A.D.D. kicks in real soon because Creative Meeting is about to start and they are expecting me to have my message ready…BUT, ALL I can think about – well you already know.
•So, I just thought I’d do a quick blog to say that. Maybe I should do more “quick” blogs in 2009. Hmmmm….
•Don’t forget to bring “2&U” to whatever campus you choose to attend. That person that just walked by you or came to mind, you should INVITE them right now and then PRAY God rocks their world Sunday!
•4 Days, 23 Hours, 15 minutes, 41 seconds to January11!!
•MacLean’s 14th Birthday party Rocked. Close friends and family. Granny’s Chocolate Cake – THE BEST in the world – NO JOKE! No, I’m not on tilt BUT HE got a freakin flat screen before his dad – what up with that!!

Worth It All – Part 2Posted by: jcarpenter in Christmas 2008, Uncategorized, tags: 706, Add new tag, Fowler Drive, NOHS•God literally Rocked My World yesterday about what He wants to do in 2009 in this church and community!! Can’t wait to share but tomorow….hijacked blog again.
•The 706 GUYS hit me up BIG TIME with their Fowler Drive stories wanting some equal time.
FIRST – More Christmas A.D.D. –
#1 – There are NO SUNDAY MORNING services at either the Athens or Oconee Campuses this Sunday, Dec 21.
#2 – Christmas Service Times are 4:00pm AND 6:00 pm THIS SUNDAY, Dec 21 at NORTH OCONEE HIGH SCHOOL Fine Arts Center.
#3 – Your tickets say on top “Christmas Eve Services” – THIS SUNDAY, DEC 21 ARE our Christmas Eve Services. There are NO SERVICES on December 24 (hey – we’re not perfect – just forgiven).
#4 – This also means that if you are traveling to see Gram and Gramps on Saturday night this weekend, you CAN GET BACK for Sunday Christmas Services without getting up at the butt crack of dawn.
#5 - Christmas is not complete without the forgiveness of our Saviour – I can’t wait to see how many lives God Rocks when they ‘Flip The Switch’ this Sunday. I believe it will be the BIGGEST DAY of LIFE CHANGE in our church’s brief history.
#6 - Seriously, you need to do WHATEVER IT TAKES to INVITE WHOEVER you can THIS SUNDAY to CHRISTMAS @ COMPASS – God is going to ROCK their worlds. I can’t believe some of the stuff that is being planned – DARN it’s going to be a great day!!
#7 – TICKETS - GET THEM HERE! they are free…nobody will be turned away…helps us big time with planning. We’re at 900 – 300 more will be the BIGGEST OPPORTUNITY we’ve ever had to tell people about Jesus at one time in this community. Finish Strong – bake some cookies, get some candy canes and invite EVERYONE you know to Taste Test Compass this Christmas.
#8 – 50,000 Mailers hit the boxes yesterday and today all over Northeast Georgia – Pray Like Crazy – God wants to do something BIG in Northeast Georgia!!
SECOND – A.D.D. #2
•By Popular Demand we have 2 Sided JANUARY11.org Yard Signs. Email Wesley Odum here to reserve yours and arrange pick up this week.
BACK ON TRACK
•The Preacher’s kids were at East Side Wal-Mart last night…let me just put it this way, the Red Posts at the entrance ARE Removable – never knew that before!!
•We have the Most Stinkin Awesome, Off the Chain, Flat Out Incredible Student Leadership Team ANYWHERE in the entire world! They rock and JESUS rocks through them!!
•Here’s the email “UN-EDITED” – if you want a HUGE God Moment hang to the end - the LAST PARAGRAPH Says It All (yes, tears again!!) :
About half of the group met at the church around 4:00, and we headed up the loop to the Wal-Mart at Epps Bridge. Jonathan, Ko-D, and Derek decided to lead us in song, which was probably a bad idea from the get-go. More on that later. Anyway, we knew that serveral were going to meet us there (Seth, Erin, Phillip, Ethan, and James) [Jim's insert - ERIN is a brave 706 Warrior -ESS], so this group was going to be BIG. I was actually worried about us getting kicked out of Wal-Mart. I learned later as three of them were throwing a football over the top of the men’s clothing section that Wesley actually encouraged a couple of boys in the group to try to get kicked out of Wal-Mart. I know he was joking, but they might not have thought this. We got about $120 worth of merchandise from Wal-Mart, scanned everything ourselves, loaded it in my trunk, and took off to Academy Sports. Some of the guys took turns riding the bike for the five year old across the parking lot. How nobody is hurt, and how the bike is still in one piece, I’d like to know. There are pictures of the bike rides that would probably incriminate us. Academy wasn’t THAT bad…well…kinda. This was supposed to be an in-and-out deal. BUT, they saw the weightlifting equipment and treadmills. Nobody died, but there were probably a couple of close calls. Thankfully I kept my camera in the car. We then went to eat at Wendy’s on Epps Bridge, but this wasn’t really eventful. The trip back to the church…ummm…I’m glad that it was dark outside so that nobody could see the activities taking place. As we were leaving the parking lot, the three “heathens” started a chorus of “99 bottles of beer on the wall”, and they got down into the lower eighties before screwing things up. I was also taking Seth home, and he looked like he was going to strangle all three of them. He wanted to kill Derek and Jonathan more when they stripped down to their boxers for fun, and started to take pictures with their phones. [JIM INSERT - NOTE TO SELF - probably should have Edited that last line.] With all of the craziness mentioned, it was still one of the most impactful things I’ve seen done in my 23 years on this planet. These eight students donated their time and their money in order to make sure that this family wasn’t going to go “without” on Christmas in 2008. I know a lot of people say that kids have changed. They aren’t as “great” as they used to be, they say. I beg to differ. People try to focus on the negative sides of students in order to pump up THEIR generation. When looking at the events of Sunday, I’d argue that they’ve already surpassed my generation of five-six years prior. The Lord is doing great things with The 706, and it’s more impactful when you see it in front of you. 706 Small Group Leader – Jimmy Hughes

Sunday Post GamePosted by: jcarpenter in General, Uncategorized, tags: 30 Days To Live, Beyond, Oconee, VolunteersSUNDAY POST GAME A few random thoughts about today before kicking off a new week… •Not sure if Sunday ENDS the week or BEGINS the week…maybe the Post Game is the Pre Game. •I do know I’m already PUMPED about what God has laid on my heart to share this Sunday. •I LOVE Pastoring Compass Church – today our services ROCKED! •My wife called me “THE MAN” today – I’m still not over that! •Lis did a GREAT JOB casting vision for volunteers for our Athens and newly opening OC campus. Right at 30 New Volunteers Signed Up Today – that ROCKS! Sign up here to volunteer at our Athens or OC campuses and be part of rocking this city for Jesus! •We talked about making the most of our Life’s “DASH” (you know, that thing that appears on everybody’s tombstone between the dates). •I’m still stuck on, “Does my Dash reflect the kind of life God could trust with a LOT or just a LITTLE?” •I’m realizing the LOT (which is what my heart wants) requires a dying to self, daily attitude adjustments, and a ton of changes. •I want to make sure I’m MY VERY BEST to things that LAST FOREVER and are not just temporary. •Sunday’s 30 Days Story from Larry Damerval (listen here) quite possibly was one of the most POWERFUL MOMENTS ever @ Compass – We were ALL in TEARS at the end – tough, but life changing moments! •There were 16 people that “Flipped The Switch” this morning. That season of life change that God began during Switch is NOT slowing down! •We have baptized 12 out of the last 13 weeks – stories of JESUS changing the old to new is ALWAYS a highlight and NEVER gets old! •Chris had 3 new Christ Followers walk up to him today ready to be baptized. It’s what they would do it if they only had 30 Days to Live so they are taking the plunge. LOVE It! •Guess what? WE ARE BAPTIZING this coming Sunday too!! (If you are ready, click here) •We also had THE MOST GENEROUS MOMENT in our church’s history today – on Thursday one of our Compass families gave an $80,000 check towards BEYOND. •Yes, all the staff touched it, kissed it, hugged it, prayed over it before we deposited it. •Two Words – UNEXPLAINABLE yet UNDENIABLE! •That is THE LARGEST GIFT Compass Church as EVER received. They were more excited about WRITING that check than RECEIVING the BIG check that made that one possible. I’m BLOWN Away by God and blown away by their obedience, trustworthiness, and generosity! God will use that to reach THOUSANDS in this city. •God REALLY Does have our back. I’m feeling very small, incredibly humbled, exceptionally Grateful, and unbelievably Blessed! Going to blog more about this tomorrow. •Alex Maeland has a gift leading worship. I love going into battle with this kid. He’s only 21. God’s got BIG PLANS to use this generation to take this world for Jesus! •SHOUT OUT to our VOLUNTEERS – I’m BLOWN Away right now by your passion and commitment to do WHATEVER it takes to pull off a Sunday and CONNECT Athens to Jesus! A. You get your butt out of bed EARLY on really cold Sundays! B. It seemed like there was two feet of pine needles in the parking lot early Sunday – it was clear by 8:15 and ready for people! Great Job Athens Campus Set Up Team. C. We tested new technology in our services today – the PRODUCTION TEAM (ALL Volunteers & all ages high school to adults on camera, lights, graphics, computer, backstage, onstage) knocked it out of the park! Words fall short to explain what this will mean in the future to our ability to tell people about Jesus! D. We have a ton of New VOLUNTEERS and MINISTRY TEAM LEADERS Test Driving different ministry areas - WELCOME to the TEAM – God’s going to use you to Rock Athens for Jesus! •HUGE THANKS s to those who have made the switch to the 9:30am service for opening up chairs and children’s spots for guests in the 11:15 service. •There’s a HUGE BUZZ about what God is doing in this warehouse, our city, and getting ready to do in OC. •Quote of the week from an OC Campus Leader - ”Two of the families that I have been praying for told me that they had no excuse not to attend church starting January 11th…especially since the OC service will be at 11:15!!!!!“ •168 hours and we GET to do this all again – What are you going to do THIS WEEK with those 168 hours that MATTER! I pray it involves REPRESENTING Jesus WELL and TELLING people about Jesus BOLDLY.

Sunday Pre-GamePosted by: jcarpenter in Uncategorized, tags: 30 Days To Live, Food Drive, OC Launch, volunteerSUNDAY PRE-GAME #1 – TODAY
I can’t sleep so I’ll blog!!
TODAY – GOD showed up BIGGER than He EVER HAS in our church’s history and ROCKED our world!!
If you’re a Dawg Fan – it would be like making it to and winning the National Championship!
BIG DAYS in my life – kissing Lis for the first time (WHOA!!!!), our honeymoon (…ok, WTMI), birth of our 3 kids (I’ll never forget), and TODAY!!!!!!
OK – you get the picture – BIG STINKIN DAY – I CAN’T WAIT to tell you on Sunday what GOD DID!!
Today was also one of the TOUGHEST – I had to make a tough leadership call that I hated to make! It was the right call, but TOUGHEST one to date!
#2 – THIS WEEK
I told our staff on Monday before I flew to Ohio this was a MAKE or BREAK week!
So much had to come together for the January 11 OC Launch to be successful. Sign up here to Volunteer.
I feel good about where we are now – BUT, there’s SO MUCH MORE to do!!
The staff worked their butts off this week (PS – these guys are THE BEST – tell them that when you see them Sunday).
They love Jesus, they love You, they love this community, and they love CHANGED LIVES!
God REALLY DID ask and REALLY DOES want us to do this thing!
I heard Rick Warren say today that he believes God allowed him to write the best selling book of all time (“The Purpose Driven Life”) because He knew He could trust him with it.
I believe God has given us NOHS because He knows He can trust us with this incredible privilege and awesome responsibility to tell people about Jesus in Northeast Georgia!
We’re NOT going to let Him down!!
#3 – THIS SUNDAY
A. I believe WILL BE the largest attended Sunday to date this year. Why? I know what God has asked me to say and I believe He wants to say it to a ton of people!
B. WILL BE one of the MOST POWERFUL and LIFE CHANGING days we’ve ever experienced at Compass Church!
C. I can’t say it enough – the 30 Days story WILL CHANGE your life – it has mine. Share your story here!
C. You need to get there EARLY – huge help with parking, kids registration, and seating!
D. We need you to attend the 9:30am service if at all possible – huge thanks to those once again who have made this switch and opened up seats for our guests @ 11:15.
F. I’m praying God will Rock your world and whoever you bring with you. SATURDAY PRAYER TIME – 9:00am – 9:45am @ church.
F. INVITE a guest, PRAY like crazy for God to do the Unexplainable yet Undeniable; DON’t come alone, DON’T come late.
#4 – RANDOM THOUGHTS
A. I talked to a first time guest last night. He put me on hold to finish paying for a can of Copenhagen – I LOVE THIS CHURCH and the PEOPLE God is bringing our way!
B. LOVED this email – “Hey Jim! FINALLY…..two of my close friends who pay their therapists way too much came and sat with me at Compass Sunday!!!!!!! I wrote their names on the list during the Switch series and have prayed for and witnessed to them for months. Thanks for making it so easy for newcomers to feel welcome and right at home immediately. This past Sunday, including them, I had 6 adult guests with me and 5 Kidzu guests with me! I AM SO HAPPY! WHAT A WEEK!“
PS – that’s the THIRD week in a row God has brought another one of our 184! Keep INVITING and keep PRAYING!!
C. Technology test did NOT go as well as we hoped for today. Think we know the problem. Dang – we NEED this to work – it will save us thousands!!
D. I can’t wait to see Mackenzie sing and dance in the musical BIG Friday night and Sunday afternoon. Our whole small group is going – I LOVE our small group!
E. Tomorrow at 1:00 pm we’re throwing a party for Grandma’s 93rd Birthday. She ROCKS. We’re Blessed to have her around. They’ll be about 25 close friends and family. I can’t wait to see her smile when she walks in the room!!!
F. GA High School Football Playoffs start tomorrow night – if you are a sports fan, there’s nothing like it!!
BEAT TECH FOOD DRIVE
Ok CompassCrazies – time to step up!
We are helping provide food to the Food Bank of NE GA this month in order to make sure that people have a Thanksgiving meal.
THIS SUNDAY – I’m asking EVERYONE who can to do WHATEVER you can and pitch in so we can make a difference in this city.
Here’s a list of items we will be collecting this Sunday…
I think it would ROCK if every person attending Compass Church this weekend could at least bring one thing (more if possible) and allow NE GA to see the IMPACT of a church that is serious about meeting needs in the name of Jesus!

Sunday Post GamePosted by: jcarpenter in Uncategorized, tags: Oconee launch, sex, vision nightTo say Sunday ROCKED would be an understatement. Sunday was one of THE BEST DAYS EVER in the history of Compass! I’ll break up the highlights into 2 sections to keep it all straight. #1 – SUNDAY MORNING HIGHLIGHTS GOD SHOWED UP! We boldy went THERE and He showed up BIG TIME. Sunday’s Talk about SEX is a MUST LISTEN for EVERY Middle & High School/College Student, EVERY Single, and EVERY Married couple in the WORLD. Most explicit, powerful, bold, in your face talk we’ve ever done! Click Here to get a recording of the message. God wanted to help the Athens housing economy this week – I’ve heard several singles are looking for an apartment after telling their boyfriends one of them needed to move out – I love it! Way to go LADIES…some of you men need to “MAN UP” & lead the way in this!! Statements/Emails/Text Highlights (40+ waiting in my inbox Monday): …14 year old Teen: “I never knew till Sunday what I was doing was such a ‘punch in the face to God.’ I told my boyfriend ‘No More Sex’ and he could break up with me if he wanted because my #1 priority in life is now to PLEASE GOD with my life.” …20 Something married: “..never so proud to sit in a church as I was on Sunday.” …80+ year old lady: “My 2 grandsons were here…best message I’ve ever heard!” …20 Something Single Mom: “in a conversation at work with a man contemplating cheating on his wife…I ran to my car, got my message notes from Sunday, told him he needed to go buy these books, call a counselor, and go home and talk with his WIFE and consult with GOD and not me!…He actually scheduled an appointment!!” I told my family this story last night at the dinner table…MacKenzie, my 9 year old came over to me and asked me why I was crying – it brought me to tears again. Compass – IF we will stay FAITHFUL & FOCUSED & BROKEN before God – what we are seeing is only the beginning. I continue to dream and ask God for THAT DAY to be THIS DAY & witness 3000 people Flip The Switch in one day!! Oh…my favorite from Sunday: “I’ve never met a pastor with such testicular fortitude to talk about and handle a topic like that.” We welcomed 40 First Time Guests – Blows Me Away!! We Baptized 5 and had at least 7 that I know of Flipped The Switch! I don’t get a break – THIS SUNDAY – Are We Living in the END TIMES!! – can’t wait. #2 – VISION NIGHT @ NOHS The ADRENALINE RUSH of talking with 150 Compass Servant Leaders looking out over the 1200 seat auditorium God graciously & miraculously provided for us to reach people in Oconee, Barrow, and Walton counties was UNEXPLAINABLE yet UNDENIABLE. It was after 1 am that I finally fell asleep Sunday night!! I feel to my knees pinching myself and saying to God: “HELP, HELP, HELP – there’s NO WAY we can do this humanly speaking.” Can I share a growing desire in my life and for this church? I don’t want us to ever attempt anything we’re capable of doing on our own. Why? Because then we can take all the credit. I want to see God do things in me, in you, and through this church that we are ABSOLUTELY INCAPABLE of so we can’t possibly take any credit for them…UNEXPLAINBLE humanly yet UNDENIABLY God. Oconee Campus LAUNCH DATE – January 11th, 2009 (that will come quickly). Click Here to sign up for the OC LAUNCH TEAM (FREE CHICK-FIL-A for 1st 50!): Check back on Blog tomorrow for: YES – there will be Live Teaching, Live Band, and rockin’ KIDS environment at BOTH OC & HW 29 campuses. Had an INTENSE Planning meeting with STAFF – to launch, some really good things we’re doing in December we may have to say NO to (pray for wisdom). Think we’ve got the Jan ’09 Sunday service schedule figured out too…gotta make sure before we post. CATALYST ROAD TRIP this week…BEST LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE I’ve ever been to for 40 and under. We’re taking 26 and helping as volunteers. My 6th year to go. Looking forward to hearing William Young, “The Shack” author speak. |
