Couple of summers ago, Compass did a series called “Supporting Cast” – all about the behind the scenes supporting cast members in the Bible you have never heard of BUT GOD found them in their place often in the back of the lot, called them out, and used them to ROCK the world for Him!! So, check this out – when God sent Elijah to find Elisha and anoint him as the next great prophet in Israel – it was in the way back, back, back, back BEHIND THE SCENES (You can read the story here - 1 Kings 19:15-21).
Lisa and I had the opportunity to watch this video together earlier this week – WOW!!!!! Brought me to tears as I saw first hand the “ELISHAS” – people who had FOUND THEIR PLACE behind the scenes and even in the dark!! The RESULT – BLEW me away to see WHAT God was doing and WHO God was using “Behind the Scenes” every week, the stuff NOBODY sees, that allows a life to be changed, heaven to get bigger, satan to be kicked in the teeth, and a city to be served.

LOVED SUNDAY – really believe Sunday’s message 2 weeks ago was THE KEY to getting a FAST START on the B.Y.E. and this past Sunday’s message is THE KEY to having the B.Y.E. – FINDING your Place, STAYING IN Place, and WORKING your place.
Cliff’s Notes Version – if Elisha had NOT been IN PLACE when God sent Elijah to find him in a CERTAIN PLACE, he would have MISSED HIS PLACE and ultimately THE PLACE God had for him. A.D.D. Moment – SO MANY WANT to have the B.Y.E. but are unwilling to PREPARE for the B.Y.E. It’s not mysterious or magical, it’s simply FINDING the place God wants to do His Greatest Work in your life and then STAYING IN and WORKING THAT PLACE. I believe so many people lose their “Spiritual Mo” because they are flying solo – trying to be a Christ Follower all on their own. That was never God’s Plan.
For Lisa and I, as we look back on 22 years of marriage and 3 kids we realize being PLANTED and PLACED in the LOCAL CHURCH has been the PRIMARY PLACE God has used to connect us to Him, give us courage to take audacious steps of faith, get to know Him better, shape and mold our lives and family, develop our gifts and talents, keep us on track, and impact the world. As my kids say, “(the local church) That’s BEAST, Dad!!”

I believe everyone has high hopes to have The Best Year Ever, BUT PREPARATION is what will separate those who experience the BYE or fall short. At Compass, not only do we believe this year can be your BYE, we are going to PREPARE TOGETHER to make it happen. We are inviting everyone from 12-100 to jump in with me, our staff and Compass prayer partners and get a “FAST START” Spiritually to 2012 through 21 Days of Prayer and Fasting. 5 things you should know -
#1 - WHAT’S A FAST START?
Over the past 5 years, along with many of our staff and prayer partners, we have jump started our year with a 21 Day Fast – a time to deny our appetite to deepen our relationship with God. A “Fast Start” to each year has given me a spiritual edge as a husband, father, and leader I’ve never before experienced. I believe your BYE begins with, will be sustained by, and end with a passionate FOCUS on getting to know JESUS more than ever. And, one of the most powerful ways is through a focused time of prayer and fasting.
#2 – HOW?….I’VE NEVER FASTED BEFORE –
No worries – I recommend 3 Fast Start Options -
- #1 – Jump off the high dive & take on the Daniel Fast (which is what I will be doing). All Natural – fruits, nuts, veggies, & water…basically no dairy, sugar, bread, or meat. YIKES!! You want something different, gotta do something different.
- #2 - Fast one or more meals every day for 21 days. I’ve done this through the years at different times of seeking God’s direction for a next step or a big decision. I skip a meal a day and spend that time in prayer and God’s Word.
- #3 – Choose one or more foods to fast for 21 days. Don’t be a wus – gotta be something you really like…Liver and Onions does not count.
#3 – WHY SHOULD I FAST?
Something Significant happens when we go ALL IN and pursue God with TOTAL ABANDONMENT. We see Fasting THROUGHOUT the Scripture as a way to seek, hear, and connect with God in a powerful and life changing way. Leaders often called the nation of Israel to times of fasting before Big Moves of God. As God has strategically positioned us to begin the year in the HEART of our City, we want to strategically position ourselves for God to Show Up and Show Off in a BIG WAY in our lives, homes, schools, church, city and beyond.
Beginning Sunday, check out FAST START at the Compass Website for all the details on what the Bible says about fasting, how to fast, and types of fasting. And, log on to Compass’ Facebook site to share what God is doing, ask questions, and be encouraged. I’ll also be randomly sharing in my blog posts.
4 – WHEN DOES THE FAST START BEGIN?
We’ll start at sundown this Sunday, January 8 and break the fast on Sunday, January 29 after our worship service – dudes, super bowl parties are NOT in jeopardy. We’ll also have waiting for you on Sunday a FAST START Guide with daily Scriptures and Prayer Focuses for our 21 day Fast Start to 2012.
#5 – WHAT IF I START & STOP, CAN’T FINISH, or CAN’T FAST?
No Worries. Fasting is Personal. Fasting is not legalistic. Don’t get so caught up in the Daily Details of Fasting that you miss the Dynamic Depths of connecting with God through Fasting. Also, for some there be may legitimate physical reasons you cannot take on something like the Daniel Fast. Just pick an option that can work for you that allows you to jump start your year by passionately pursuing God like never before.
LOVE being your pastor and so much desire for each of you to be “Armed & Dangerous” for all God has planned for you in 2012. I know that God is going to work in our lives over the next 21 days in ways we could never have imagined. (Ephesians 3:20).

It would be your BEST YEAR EVER!!!

#5 – PLEASE PRAY for my mom and dad in Florida. Got word this morning that their AC unit caught on fire at their home – lot of craziness, smoke, excitement, EMTs, Fire Trucks, the whole nine yards. They are ok and thankfully were able to get out of the house. Still assessing damage but your prayers make a difference!!!

Still on a HIGH from our Christmas Services – might never come down, WOW!!!! 5 things in the final post of 2012 as we wrap a year of seeing God do AMAZING in our lives, church, and city –
#1 – CHRISTMAS @ THE CLASSIC CENTER in the HEART of our city ROCKED!!!!
3 FULL houses, music was AMAZING, and 72 People “WENT HOME ANOTHER WAY” – BOO YAH!! Candle lighting was not permitted at TCC so our Creative Team came up with an idea nothing short of genius – GLOW STICKS. At the end of the service we asked everyone who wanted to Go Home Another Way and surrender their lives to Jesus to BREAK their glow sticks representing Jesus breaking the power of sin in our lives and RAISE them high in the air representing Jesus Illuminating their path to go home another way (2 Timothy 1:9-10).
MOST POWERFUL CHRISTMAS SERVICES we’ve ever had!! I will NEVER FORGET seeing 72 people raise their glow sticks high in the air and the POWER of God on display to change lives and send people home another way!! Compass VOLUNTEERS – you are THE BEST and your heart to SERVE and CONNECT people to Jesus is second to none – THANK YOU for Stepping Up, Changing Plans, and FINISHING the year STRONGER than we ever have. The only thing missing was those who were travelling for the holidays – we missed you, hope you had a safe trip and great Christmas, can’t wait to see you in the new year.

CHRISTMAS @ THE CLASSIC CENTER
During an early morning workout today I’m kept telling myself “BRING IT, bro” – give it all you got, make this moment count, finish strong (yea, when you 45 & it’s 45 degrees outside, gotta get yourself psyched!!!)
When I walk in my door from a morning workout, the first thing I see is our B-E-A-UTTIFUL Christmas Tree (Lis does an AMAZING job getting our house ready for Christmas). BUT, today was different…God messed me up – Don’t you get it bro, it’s not about Christmas at YOUR HOUSE, but Christmas at MY HOUSE. WOW, all of a sudden –
- Our Tree reminded me of HIS TREE that JESUS died on for me.
- Our Star reminded me of HIS STAR that He still sends today to give us direction and HIS STARS (you and me) that He still strategically places into people’s lives to POINT and CONNECT people to Him.
- Our Gifts reminded me of HIS GIFTS – Forgiveness, Salvation, and Redemption – the BEST GIFTS we could EVER RECEIVE this Christmas.
Our first Christmas Services Wednesday evening at HIS HOUSE at The Classic Center were EXCITING & AMAZING – had a young lady go into labor (seriously – now, that’s a Christmas story) AND saw a dozen plus people raise their Glow Sticks in a darkened room (you gotta experience it) & Accept the BEST INVITATION EVER, Jesus’ incredible gift of salvation…words fall short (2 Corinthians 9:15). No doubt, the most POWERFUL Christmas service I’ve ever been a part of at Compass.
Yea, church – let’s not just BRING IT, another festive holiday…but let’s BRING THEM this Christmas to HIS HOUSE. Lis and I had 2 first time guest families there Wed night – boo yah. My sister and nephew unexpectedly surprised us getting into town late last night for the Christmas weekend – Can’t Wait for them to experience Christmas at The Classic Center. My whole family is coming Saturday. I’m SERIOUSLY PUMPED!!!
“BRING THEM bro” - give it all you got, make this moment count, finish strong the year strong!! The FEAST has been prepared, the BANQUET is ready….let’s extend the BEST INVITATIONS EVER and invite the guests to “COME to HIS HOUSE.” The Celebration is going to be AMAZING!!!

PUMPED about TONIGHT & kicking off our first Christmas Services at The Classic Center – PRAY with me for God to show up and show off in a BIG WAY. 6 things I wanted to share in preparation –
#1 – So THANKFUL for what God is doing in our church right now. We talked about how to both FINISH this year STRONG and START the new year STRONGER. God has extended 5 INVITATIONS to every one of us -
- to GROW BIG by being part of something bigger than ourselves (2 Corinthians 5:20)
- to GROW GREAT by taking the “low stance” through serving – shouldda been there for that one (1 Peter 4:10-11),
- to GROW CLOSE – at Compass we are all about the “SPIRITUAL FOOD” but you can’t “Nuke” Spiritual growth, it takes time (Psalm 139:23-24)
- to GROW STRONG – you are not alone and that is why we need teammates to circle up with and need to plug in to the local church (Hebrews 10:24-25)
- and, to GROW BLESSED – God has so many good things stored up for us it would blow us away, but first we’ve got to invite him to the party (Psalm 31:19)
#2 – Our first Christmas Services at THE CLASSIC CENTER begin TONIGHT (here’s where you can see service times and reserve your free tickets). As you extend THE BEST INVITATIONS EVER we are planning for the BEST CHRISTMAS SERVICES we have ever had. I am SERIOUSLY PUMPED about all God is going to do beginning tonight. GET THERE EARLY – you don’t want to miss the beginning of this service!!!!!
HUGE THANKS to all in advance who are taking the time and changing plans to SERVE our guests at one of our services – love partnering with you to connect this city to Jesus. Christmas is such a fresh reminder that JESUS CAME FOR ME and now I/we have the opportunity to invite and bring others to an environment that God can use to CHANGE their entire life. The Banquet is ready – Let’s not forget the GUESTS!!
#3 – I want to say a huge thanks to our Compass Church Family for your AMAZING GENEROSITY. Several yeas ago we locked arms with 2 Strategic Partners in our city, Fowler Drive Elementary School and Northeast Georgia Food Bank in an initiative called Serve The City. Our goal was to begin combatting poverty in our city by doing for one what we wish we could do for all. And, as God opened doors and resources, we would continue to step through those doors.
The past couple of weeks, thanks to your amazing generosity, we have been able to -
- deliver gifts for 47 Fowler Drive students who would have otherwise had a very grim Christmas;
- host a Box Truck Food Drive with NE GA Food Bank on the Fowler campus providing meals for 100s of needy families;
- give 34 “Teacher Gift Packs” with needed classroom supplies and a small gift card to say “thank you;”
- and provide some much needed uniforms for students who can’t afford to purchase their own.
God is using your GENEROSITY to make a difference in 100s of lives in our community and see dozens of kids smile because the church stepped up and became JESUS WITH SKIN ON!! PUMPED we have this amazing opportunity together!!
#4 – Our Christmas Gift Offering is what makes much of this possible every year. Sunday we got off to a great start!! For those who were not there, you can bring your Best Gift Ever offering to one of the Christmas services – just place it in one of the boxes marked GOD’S BEST. Or, and we are encouraging as many as possible to GIVE ONLINE this year, GO ONLINE HERE and CLICK GIVE THE GIFT and follow the simple instructions to begin giving online.
#5 – Just a reminder, we will be having our Christmas services EARLY this year (tonight and Sat.) and there will be NO SERVICES on December 25th or January 1st to give our AMAZING Volunteers & Staff well deserved time with their families this holiday season. As I said in last week’s blog, Jesus really is ok with this. COMPASS PARTNERS – this is also great opportunity and a huge help for you to begin Giving Online as we head into the new year (Lisa and I set up a recurring gift for our weekly giving – you can do that here). JANUARY 8th will be our GRAND OPENING in The Classic Center – save the date, mark your calendar, and bring a friend.
#6 – Had our LAST OFFICIAL STAFF meeting in the warehouse this past Tuesday – WOW!! Can’t wait to move into our new offices on January 3rd. Packing Day is this Thursday and Friday – boo yah!! More on all that later!!

Been an AMAZING week so far – SERIOUSLY can’t Wait for SUNDAY!!
I wish every single one of you could have been with us for our TWO TRIPS to usher in Christmas early with our Strategic Partner, Fowler Drive Elementary School. BEST week BEFORE Christmas ever!!

PLEASE continue to Pray BIG for God to show up and show off like never before (my prayer is for people to “go home another route” just like the wise men did after encountering Jesus)…AND, for each of us to do our part to Invite BIG!! One thing I know – God has SOMEONE for EVERY ONE of us to be A BRIGHT STAR to this year to INVITE, BRING, and HELP them open THE BEST GIFT EVER – a new life in JESUS!!
